Because aprons were a common example of men and women’s everyday life and were principally utilitarian they are often discarded and forgotten.  As a result recording the histories and memories that aprons evoke is an important exercise. This form can be used to preserve information and help to recall stories that are meaningful for both the listener and teller. We are surprised with how many folks have a story to tell. We would appreciate your jotting down any you may wish to share. The following is Behind the Apron’s statement of purpose to help rekindle your memories.

BEHIND THE APRON:    An historic expression (of the class struggle) involving dance, music, visual arts, theatre, and new media, using the apron as catalyst.

Throughout history, sexuality, politics, societal behavior, religion, gender, and love, have been concealed, controlled, and corrupted by a small piece of cloth, sometimes plain, sometimes embellished, always significant.

We are looking especially for apron stories that are about or by men, that tell of immigrants especially of Maine, and that are connected to an industry especially Maine. We may even be interested in fiction stories.  Interviews of a story teller are accepted.  Accompanying photos of aprons a treat!
